When preparing a home-cooked meal, save your excess vegetable trimmings and mix them in with the soil in your garden. The vegetables will quickly decay adding valuable nutrients back into your soil. Of course, if you have a large amount of vegetable scraps, you should compost them in a compost heap, but small amounts of scraps can go directly to the soil.

Clean your vegetables outside in fresh water and save this for your garden. The water adds valuable nutrients back to your soil. Do not use any kinds of cleaners or foreign objects when cleaning the vegetables for best results.

Use companion plants in your organic garden. Certain specimens, if located near specific plants, create a mutually beneficial growing relationship. Some companion plants have environmental benefits, such as pest reduction or soil enrichment, so that you do not need to use harmful chemicals. Many aromatic herbs and flowers emit a strong natural odor that deters all types of common garden pests.

Use a mixture of six parts water with one part of milk regularly as a plant spray. Doing so will help keep dangerous powdery mildew at bay. You can store this in your fridge for about three weeks. It is safe to use daily until the mildew is under control.

Preparing a plot for planting a perennial garden can be done quickly and without difficulty. With a garden spade, slice under the dirt then flip it over. Next, spread out wood chips several inches deep. You want to then give the area about a couple of weeks, then you want your new perennials planted by digging into it.

Use an old laundry basket to gather your vegetables and fruits. An old basket will act like a strainer does. Rinse off your produce while it’s in the laundry basket, and any excess water will be strained out through the basket’s holes.
